Glenn Langohr does way too much unnecessary exposition and his dialogue really suffers for it. A lot of what the characters say is just unrealistic - I think to accommodate an audience who don't know much about prison. I'd still recommend reading his books though. Anything in there that isn't dialogue is pretty good. You'll see what I mean if you read them.
The Social Order of the Underworld is indeed a heavy read. It's basically an academic book based on research. It's on the level of something you might get assigned to read for university. Perhaps even heavier. Fascinating if you're interested in the mechanics of prison gangs and theories about how it all began, though.
The Mexican Mafia book is pretty good. It's a detailed account of Mexican Mafia operations through the context of a few very specific members (namely the carnales connected to the Avenues gang). Would definitely recommend it.
Mainline is a book I'd certainly recommend. Don't have much negative to say about it.

Blood In, Blood Out is, as the full title eludes to, a book about the Aryan Brotherhood. Worth a read for sure.

You've probably heard of the Black Hand. It's Rene Enriquez' biography. Well worth a read. I'd almost consider it essential or mandatory. Bear in mind that his experience was with the Eme 30-35 years ago. Apparently I never uploaded it. This link is courtesy of Roulette.
