Drug addiction & you.

Drug addiction in prison is extremely common. As obtained from many sources, we can tell that a large amount of prisons use drugs, with some being heavily addicted and under the influence. As mentioned by some individuals within the faction, drug roleplay within prison is largely underused. The reasons for using drugs in prison seem straight forward - the harsh environment, being unable to cope with distance from family, being generally bored, or drug addiction prior to prison which carries through to incarceration.

As you can imagine, pretty much any form of narcotic available on the streets is also available inside, but at a rate much higher - drugs can sell for x10 the amount in prison, it's simply about demand. This goes from marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, and so on. However, inmates have also been known to get high on legal prescription pills, that can be mashed together to make 'cocktails' as described by some inmates, or otherwise just taken on their own.

If you're looking to roleplay a realistic inmate, it would not be uncommon for you to partake in the usage of drugs. You can roleplay taking them, then developing into a fiend, whose main interest is making sure they're able to put their hands on their next hit. Or, you can just roleplay somebody who's been having a rough time in prison and resorts to drugs, frequently to maintain themselves inside. Remember that drug usage can usually be repaired, if you don't use to the point where you have an overdose, or so on. However, you're much more likely to relapse if you've already been addicted.

It is also important to remember that drug debts have happened frequently throughout prison. With cases where there have been people nearly decapitated for owing money to individuals. If you decide to take that route - which is fantastic, you should be aware that your character could be a ticking time bomb. If the individual uses the opportunity to their advantage, then you could be forced to owe that inmate favors, and at the same time pay the debt off.

To roleplay a drug addict, or user correctly, you should determine these factors.

- What's your past history with narcotics? Selling, using, etc.

- Are you in the position where drug abuse is an option for your character? A fish might not jump straight into drugs, unless they're having a super poor time. Whereas someone who's been around longer may give into drugs easier to numb how they feel.

- Will your character become addicted? Addiction is common, so it would make sense for your character to fall into that trap.

- The drug type you'll be addicted to. Are you addicted to heroin, meth, or other types of drugs, such as prescription pills. If so, you should read up on the effects in time, and what happens to those who get heavily addicted. This will impact how your character looks, and how they eventually react to people. If you're a meth-head, you'll have a high, in which you might feel snappy, then you'll drop, and feel great, before looking to find the next hit. Eventually you'll just feel an emptiness that can't be fixed after using too much.

- Does your character come onto the yard high? Are his actions heavily influenced? Bare in mind that your character could be heavily regulated for failure to follow the rules. If you come onto the yard high too often, you could eventually get rolled up or killed. Next to that, does your character frequently snap at people now? Is he overly aggressive and ready to fight somebody after nothing, regardless of etiquette.

Factoring these in is important.
